Senso Diva's unique Music Program | Thanks to a major bre a k t h rough in digital hearing-aid technology, the hearing-impaired can now experience the pleasure of listening to music to the full.
Imagine going through life without ever being able to appreciate the beauty of music. How would you feel if your favourite CDs all sounded fuzzy and indistinct? Regrettably, this has been the norm for many of the UK’s 1.7 million hearing-aid users – until now.
After five years’ development, Widex of Denmark has created the Senso Diva, one of the most advanced digital hearing aids ever produced. Senso Diva gives hearing-impaired users access to the rich and pleasurable world of music for the first time.
By switching to Senso Diva’s unique Music Program – one of six specialist functions – users can enjoy a more natural listening experience, with tones and rhythms reproduced as closely as possible to the real thing through constant adjustment to the frequencies heard by the listener.
The quality of sound in music is very d i ff e rent from that of the human voice. Like other digital hearing aids, the Senso Diva boosts speech intelligibility by reducing background noise. But this approach is unhelpful when listening to music, which has a broader range of frequencies and harmonics.
This is where the Music Program comes in: by matching the full range of incoming sounds with the user’s hearing ability, particularly in the higher registers where hearing loss is often concentrated, the problem of sound quality is solved.
Satisfied user Robert Inston, radiographer and part-time aromatherapist, certainly agrees: ‘Sounds are crisper, and when I’m out walking the dog, I can hear birds singing – something I haven’t heard for years.’
High performance, high fidelity | With its advanced microcomputer, 17 times more complex than its predecessor, the Senso Diva works on 15 frequency channels, each covering about a third of an octave. This flexibility enables users to distinguish between d i ff e rent instruments and singers easily.
Gillian Merrick, a special needsteacher, was diagnosed with hearingimpairment at 30. She loves music andgoes to concerts at least once a week. ‘I can hear the sound all around withclarity and crispness, and not just thethumping and rhythm I heard before,’she says. ‘I can tell the instrumentsapart now and enjoy the varied soundsthey make.’
Medical technician Katie Cross agrees: ‘I’ve always enjoyed live music and “testing” my Senso Diva is the perfect excuse for going out more and more often.’ One of the best applications of the Senso Diva’s music function is on theroad, where background noise often distorts or competes with the in-car stereo unit. ‘I particularly notice the difference when I’m listening to Classic FM in the car,’ Katie Cross says. ‘I can hear the music really clearly over the sound of the engine now.’
Music refreshes the spirit and can give you a new lease of life, as Paul Lee Own can testify: ‘Having a Senso Diva has made me even more keen to attend live performances – I go to concerts at least two or three times a month now.’
